Paul Edward Davies is a painter, printmaker and photographer, based in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, near Madrid, in Spain.

His work centres on the natural world, often probing the border between the figurative and abstraction. Poetry is another source of inspiration, and he has created series of prints and paintings inspired by poets including William Wordsworth (the Intimations series), Dylan Thomas (Sea Chains), and St John of the Cross (Noche Oscura), as well as Shakespeare (The Tempest).

He is a student of Zen and his work is informed by Buddhist ideas, themes, and imagery. In recent years, the monotype – perhaps the form of printmaking closest to painting – has become his preferred medium, which he enjoys for its flexibility and immediacy. The artist’s book is also becoming an important form of expression.

Paul Edward Davies has studied printmaking with Enrique González and María Expósito Santiso and bookbinding with María Luisa Núñez. He has participated in various editions of Escorial Estudios Abiertos and was a founder member of Ruta de Arte, an association of artists of the Sierra de Madrid.

The writer, journalist and art critic Julia Sáez Angulo (vice president of the Madrid Association of Art Critics) describes his work as “refined and, within abstraction, alluding to reality.”
